Independent India’s history captured in Bollywood songs

Monday, August 9th, 2010

By Madhusree Chatterjee

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) The songs of Bollywood – from “Aao bachchon tumhe dikhayen” to “Kajra re” – best portray India’s journey since independence to the present day when it is fast emerging as a major power, says a Paris-based historian-filmmaker.

Vijay Singh has chronicled the journey of India through eight enduring and much-hummed Bollywood songs in his 64-minute documentary movie, “India By Song”. The docu-feature, an Indo-French production, will be premiered Aug 14, a day before India celebrates Independence Day.

“My movie is not a straightjacket documentary – an overview of 63 years of Indian independence. There is a higher truth in it. I have tried to tell history by using Bollywood songs from the 1940s till date,” Singh told IANS in an interview.

“Film songs are not just songs, they represent the emotions of the country. The songs are the best examples of women’s emancipation – how the role of the woman has changed over the decades. Earlier, the woman acted coy while enacting love scenes but now the woman makes love to the guy from the top – virtually,” he said.

“India By Song” features eight film songs and 11 interviews, he said.

“The movie features 12 minutes of songs, 12.5 minutes of interviews and four minutes of archival footage. I went on a 4,000-km journey by road from Mumbai to Amritsar with my French and Indian crew shooting India,” Singh said.

The eight songs showcasing the changing socio-cultural and economic milieu of India include “Aao bachchon tumhe dikhaye” from “Jagriti”, “Awara hoon” from “Awaara”, “Pyar kiya to darna kya” from “Mughal-e-Azaam”, “Inhi logon ne le lina” from “Pakeezah”, “Dil ke armaan aansuon mein” from “Nikaah”, “Choli ke peeche” from “Khalnayak”, a short choreography by Saroj Khan, a sequence from the movie “Dhoom II” and “Kajra re” from “Bunty Aur Babli”.

Explaining the choice, Singh said: “While Indians could relate to ‘Awara’ in its early decades of austerity and poverty, they could identify with the song from “Mughal-e-Azam’ in the years after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death.

“For the decades that India was trying to make it big, I chose a song from ‘Naya Daur’. I tried to portray the Michael Jacksonisation of India through Saroj Khan’s choreography and ‘Dhoom II’,” Singh said.

The people interviewed include historian Romila Thapar, cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi, Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy, Mumbai domestic help Anjali and Punjab farmer Suvinder Singh Kathumangal.

“The movie is a flip-flop – the songs punctuate the history of the country. It has plenty of pretty young women to balance the semantics with glamour to lure GenNext,” Singh said.

Singh, a historian-cum-journalist-turned-filmmaker, has made critically acclaimed movies like “Jaya Ganga”, “One Dollar Curry” and “Man and Elephant”.

He has finished work on the screenplay of his new movie, “The Opium Symphony”, based on his novel, “The Whirlpool of Shadows”, which tells the love story between the second King of Awadh, Nasiruddin Haidar, and his European girlfriend.

He is in talks with big names in Bollywood for “The Opium Symphony” over the “the last two years”.

“The movie will have five Indian characters and will be an international production,” he said, pointing out that the script has earned praise from filmmakers Jane Campion, George Lucas, Shyam Benegal and Yash Chopra.

“Casting for movies in Bollywood cannot be dictated by the kind of actors I want, it depends on the availability of actors,” Singh said. “It will be a big budget movie,” he said.

Singh has written several books, including “Jaya, In Search of the River Goddess”, “The Wounded Night” and “Authors, Places of Inspiration” (as co-author).

Melbourne, Aug 05 (ANI): The house where legendary pop singer Michael Jackson died is now up for sale for 30 million dollars.

The French chateau-style mansion has seven bedrooms, a seven-car garage and 13 bathrooms, according to TMZ.

The 1600 sq metre mansion is situated in the affluent Los Angeles suburb of Holmby Hills.

MJ’s unheard songs set for November release

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Toronto, Aug 1 (IANS) A posthumous album featuring 10 never-before-heard songs from the King of Pop Michael Jackson is set for a November release.

At the time of his death, Jackson had reportedly left hard drives filled with previously unreleased music.

His former manager Frank DiLeo estimates Jackson’s vaults contain more than 100 completed and unreleased songs, including collaborations with Akon, will.i.am and Ne-Yo.

The tracks are expected to be included in the forthcoming release, alongside songs Jackson recorded at the peak of his career in the 1980s, reports torontosun.com.

“There are a couple of songs we recorded for the ‘Bad’ album that we had to cut that are just sensational,” said DiLeo.

Jackson’s doctors cleared

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

London, July 29 (IANS) The seven doctors, who were under investigation over King of Pop Michael Jackson’s death last year, will not be charged.

However, Jackson’s personal doctor Conrad Murray, who denies involuntary manslaughter, was not among the seven doctors questioned by investigators. He is accused of giving Jackson a lethal overdose of anaesthetic.

Los Angeles police had asked Californian state investigators to look into the way the doctors had prescribed drugs.

Lawyer Brian Oxman, who is representing Jackson’s father Joe in a wrongful death civil case, said he was “very disappointed”.

“The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality,” bbc.co.uk quoted him as saying.

MJ’s ‘love child’ surfaces

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Washington, July 28 (ANI): A woman, who claims to be the late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s illegitimate love child, has filed legal documents for a share of his estate, saying that her existence was being covered up.

Mocienne Petit Jackson claims that back in 1975, 17-year-old Jackson secretly impregnated her mother Barbara, who happens to be singer Diana Ross’ sister, TMZ.com reported.

And that when she was 9-years-old, Katherine Jackson hatched a plan to “abduct” her and send her off to Belgium to protect the late singer’s reputation.

In documents she filed with L.A. County Superior Court she also claims that all 7 of her abductors were later murdered.

Mocienne, who currently lives in the Netherlands, decided to come forward with her story so she can formally claim a part of the inheritance.

She is waiting for the judge to give the go-ahead on a DNA test, and claims that she was diagnosed with Vitiligo.

She also wants custody of MJ’s kids so she can give them a “more normal life”. (ANI)

Indian magicians blow my mind: American illusionist

Monday, July 26th, 2010

By Priyanka Sharma

New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) Renowned American illusionist Franz Harary, who once made the Taj Mahal disappear, says Indian magicians have no money, no technology, but their magic “blows my mind”.

“Magic started in India around 5,000 years ago and eventually became popular. But shortly after it was invented, it became stagnant. There is a whole lot of it to come out,” Franz, 45, told IANS over phone from Mumbai. “About 250-300 years ago it came over to the US.”

Harary, who has made several friends in India and frequently comes visiting, says the country has immense talent.

“About 12 years ago, I met a group of magicians who live in Shadipur in New Delhi. They are just unbelievable. They just blew my mind. They have nothing – no money, no technology and their magic is stronger than mine. What they do blows everything I do, leaving all the research and money I put behind,” he said.

“They tap into the core of the psychology of what makes Indian magic work. Their approach is real and not an illusion. When I saw it, I was surprised. It made me rethink everything I do.

“For the past 12 years I’ve been observing them and it has made me revise my own magic. They have helped me more than I have helped them,” he added.

Franz had been doing magic since the age of 13. He aspired to be a singer and dancer and used to design illusions as hobby. However, his commercial breakthrough happened at the age of 21 when he initiated a stage illusion for Michael Jackson’s 1984 Victory tour.

He made Jackson levitate and disappear on one side of the stage to reappear with his brothers on the other side.

Harary is here to judge STAR One’s reality show “India’s Magic Star”. He feels the show would help revive Indian magic.

“When I heard about the show, I felt it was an amazing opportunity to take everything that I have learned and developed as a Western illusionist and bring it right back to where it all began,” he said.

“Today, all of them (Indian magicians) are seen doing magic that was invented by my friends. They all look like American magicians from Las Vegas who happen to be Indian. I felt this is the opportunity to tell them: guys, you got to get up. I want to help them realise who they are and what you are and what you can do.”

Franz says he is ready to do anything for the entire culture to regain its position in India.

“This is not about just a television show; it is much bigger than this. It’s an attempt that the entire culture regain its position. I love India, I love everything that Indian magic stands for. Anything that I can do and in whatever way I am open for all that,” he said.

Franz has created illusions for Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Cher, Steven Spielberg and even Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan during an awards function. And Salman Khan is next on his wishlist now.

“I had once made Shah Rukh disappear from one side of the stage and later he appeared on the other side. I would love to create a similar illusion for Salman Khan,” he said.

Franz signed off saying, “We are in talks for opening something in India that would be absolutely amazing. It will be based on my magic and the Indian magic and it would be the first of its kind on the planet. You would be able to go and spend a day there.”

MJ loved Nazi videos and Judy Garland TV specials

Monday, July 26th, 2010

New York, July 26 (ANI): Legendary singer Michael Jackson loved Nazi videos and Judy Garland TV specials and dramas that showed troubled boys in dysfunctional families.

According to the King of Pop’s former movie peddler, Jackson displayed the tapes along the walls of his video vault at the Neverland ranch.

“Michael Jackson was a very special client to me,” The New York Post quoted Norman Scherer, owner of a videotape distribution company in the 1990s as saying.

A New Yorker in 1995 who was looking to place big orders for a ‘famous’ client approached Scherer but he wanted him to be discreet.

“He had a really good collection,” Scott Schaffer, Jackson’s former personal assistant, who hunted down Scherer to buy obscure titles, said.

“I knew what Jackson wanted,” he added.

The Hitler movies included ‘Nazis Of Pure Blood,’ ‘Oasis of the Zombies’ and ‘Hitler’s Children.’ (ANI)

MJ had a secret son with mystery women in Vegas?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

London, July 16 (ANI): A boy brought up by legendary pop star Michael Jackson and his family is rumoured to be his secret son, according to insiders.

Donte Williams Jackson may be the son of the King of Pop and a mystery woman he had a brief fling with.

The Jackson family has raised the 18-year-old boy since he was a toddler and he still lives with Jackson’s 80-year-old mother Katherine.

Alejandra Oaziaza, who has four kids by Jacko’s brothers Randy and Jermaine, mainly looked after Donte.

Earlier it was thought that Donte was the son of Alejandra and Randy, before she left him for Jermaine.

But he can’t be their biological son as he was born just eight months after their previous child.

It is now being speculated that Donte is the son of Jackson from an affair in Las Vegas in the 1990s.

“Michael was always very close to Donte. We’re not even sure if Donte knows who his parents are. He’s one of the nicest kids you could possibly meet,” The Sun quoted a source as saying. (ANI)

Swami Nityananda gives first discourse after release from jail

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Bangalore (Karnataka), July 12 (ANI): Swami Nityananda, the godman involved in a sex scandal, gave his first public discourse after being released from jail on bail here on Sunday.

Speaking to his devotees for the first time in almost four months Nityananda spoke about his experience during his stay in prison.

Speaking amid a packed hall of devotees from across the country and abroad, Nityananda said he bears no hatred towards anyone.

Taking snipe at the media coverage over the sex scandal involving the Swami and an actress from the Southern film industry, Nityanand compared the coverage with the news of death of Michael Jackson.

“I heard from some devotee who was reporting to me (that) she had brought an article saying that in internet history only twice jamming has happened in the internet due to traffic, one Michael Jackson death, second Nityananda scandal,” said Nityananda.

Devotees were overwhelmed by the return of their master and turned up in huge numbers to show their support.

“I am very happy because I felt that we are very used to hear Swami-ji talking and many of us are practising his teachings and techniques of meditation. So to have him talk again is very good news for us,” said Chandrananda.

“As a devotee it has been a testing time not listening to swami-ji. Swami-ji is our life, like what he says, what he is going to teach us, those are the words we are looking forward to. So this was very hard time for us, last 80 days and now we want to listen to what he has to say,” said Arpit.

On June 13 Nityanand performed a self-purification rite by lighting fires all around him.

The swami was released from jail on June 12 after the Karnataka High Court granted him bail on June 11.

Nityananda, who was behind bars for over 50 days, is facing several criminal charges, including rape.

The godman, who has a sprawling ashram at Bidadi, about 30 km from Bangalore, was arrested from northern Himachal Pradesh state on April 21, more than a month after a TV channel telecast video footage showing him in a sexual act with a woman, believed to be a Tamil actress.

Nityananda was arrested on several criminal charges, including molestation, hurting religious sentiments and fraud. (ANI)

New York, July 2 (ANI): R&B singer Chris Brown broke down in tears during his Michael Jackson tribute at the BET Awards last week when he got to ‘Man in the Mirror’ – but a witness claims it was all a sham.

‘He rubbed it in and he started crying,’ The New York Daily News quoted a source as telling the gossip site.

Brown’s rep, meanwhile, has rubbished the accusations.

‘[He] was moved by the opportunity to pay tribute to his idol,’ he told entertainmentwise.com. (ANI)

MJ’s mum ‘to produce movies about his life’

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

New York, July 02 (ANI): Legendary singer Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine has reportedly struck a business deal to produce and distribute movies about the life of the late King of Pop.

According to TMZ, Jackson’s mother has hundreds of hours of video, including the family’s move from Gary, Indiana to Los Angeles after The Jackson 5 signed with Mowtown in 1968.

Howard Mann, who co-authored a book called ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ with Katherine, is reported to have bought the rights to more videos of the King of Pop owned by his friend and business partner Marc Shaffel, reports the New York Post.

Katherine, 80, is reportedly involved in a business deal to produce and distribute several movies about the life of the legendary singer.

However, the late singer’s estate has the exclusive right to market the Michael’s name and image, which could put the movie plans in a tricky legal position, TMZ reported. (ANI)
